January: Music and Dance
Attend New Year's Day festivities.
Challenge: Make an instrument out of local materials. OR, Learn to play a song from
another country on an instrument. OR, Learn a dance from another culture.
February: World Thinking Day
This month shares a theme with every girl scouting troop in the world. Each year is
different. There are over 145 different countries with Girl Scouting troops.
March: Cultural Heritage
Attend the Women's Day and/or the Culture Day events.
Challenge: Learn a new Micronesian song, dance, story or oral tradition and/or
handicraft and share it with the troop.
Document your efforts and share it with the Public Library.
April: Environmental Conservation
Attend the Earth Day event and learn the list of,
"Top Twenty Tips of Conservation".
Challenge: Make a craft made from materials that are usually thrown away. Example:
weave a basket out of aluminum juice bags.
May: Skills
Attend the Skills Challenge Day event.
Challenge: Learn how to budget and balance a checkbook. Write a one page essay
about: "Why it is important to save money?" OR, Ask a librarian or College Professor
to teach you more study skills. OR, Learn to make, create, build or prepare
something you have never tried before.
June: Reading
Sign up for the Summer Reading Club at the Public Library and get
a library card.
Challenge: Write a story or document a local legend. OR,
Start a reading club with your troop.
July: Technology
Attend the island-wide event to learn basic and safe internet use.
Challenge: Learn how to design a logo with a graphic design program. OR,
Learn how to cite internet research sources.
August: Business
Contact a local business they are going to model their business plan
after and ask as many questions as they can think of.
Challenge: Make a business plan. Learn how to start a business, market the
business and about hospitality.
September: Fitness and Sports
Attend the island-wide hiking excursion.
Challenge: Join a sports team or exercise class. Share tips with your troop.
October: Emergency Preparedness
Attend the island-wide Emergency Preparedness event.
Challenge: Make an Emergency Preparedness Kit and share what you learn with
your family and troop.
November: Health
Attend the island-wide nutrition and hygiene seminar.
Challenge: Make a poster about: What is the food plate? What are salt, sugar and fat
bad for your health? OR, What are partially hydrogenated oils? What foods are
they in and what does the man-made oil do to healthy human cells?
